Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
Biggest problem is defence...
let in 68 goals...worst in league with Stoke...

8th highest scorers with 48...

Glad we didnt get Benitez...hardly entertaining with about 1 goal a game scored

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?

Happy with 8th for first year

Tarkowski
Carvallho
Shakiri
Delph
Clyne
Mario loan will also help carvallho settle in.
And a cf of pelligrenis choice.

look at the top 6 - almost mirrors the table perfectly.
newcastle & wba were the exceptions to the rule.

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
its keeping clean sheets that makes a difference in the PL

West Brom kept 10 clean sheets last season, joint 8th in the PL.

Didn't do them much good.

Is this the same Jonny Evans whose agent told Leicester a few days ago that his fee of 4 mill needs to be added to the 3 mill for the player?

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
if Pellegrino left the forward players as is, then i wouldnt have a problem with that.

like it or not, its keeping clean sheets that makes a difference in the PL. we have plenty at the other end to score goals.

invest the £75m in a keeper, a right back, centre back and a couple of midfielders.

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
We may have a big manager, but were not seen as a big club. Our reputation has always been damaged by those two goons so even with a large transfer kitty we will have to rely heavily on Pellegrini's accolade.

Boots

I would think that he probably has a few bigger clubs keen on him, but it's definitely worth a bid. At 3m though he will probably demand a very hefty wage I would imagine.

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
Centre back is a no brainer, Jonny Evans

Experienced, 3 million release clause, would help Rice no end

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
Well, it is relevant. You mention 5 Hernandez-es, but my fag packet calculations suggest we couldn't even afford to pay 2 Hernandez without breaking FFP. So the issue is a lot more complex than just spending a budget. Worth remembering.

Eggbert Nobacon 4:22 Thu May 24
Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
and so do the players you sign for 30m so a moot point really

Alex V 4:13 Thu May 24
Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
FFP probably has more of an effect on the potential for signings than budget. Every over average wage that you pay out to a squad player has to be balanced by either a cheaper wage or a gap in the squad elsewhere.

Of course both cost a long way over £30m when their wages and bonuses are paid over the contract.

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
5 chicharito level players then?

or 3 Arnies?

Eggbert Nobacon 4:07 Thu May 24
Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
boleyn

we signed Arnie and Chicha for 26m and 16m

so no you don't have to spend 30m on every player

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
Bubbleblower. Agreed you beat me to it. All this £75m war chest that everyone seems impressed with is a complete smokescreen. Firstly, they won't spend that much and even if they did what will you get for it. Lets look at EricBailly that man Utd bought and cannot get in their team £30m, oops thats a centre back and almost half the budget gone already. Decent CM another £30m. Ah, we seem to be looking at loans and freebies already. 4 or 5 signings maybe but as bubble said £14-18m each will probably stop us getting into a relegations scrap next season but not much else.

Someone on here actually said we could gatecrash the top 6 or even higher. What a load of crap. They would need to double the £75m quoted to even get a chance of 4 or 5 players that would make a difference. And honestly do you think any sales of players wont come off the £75m. Here comes net spend of £30m, which is a massive improvement on previous years though

bubbleblower 3:48 Thu May 24
Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
So roughly c15-18m per player. One and a half Hugill's each. We'll be Champions League chasing for sure.

Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
Centre half is a difficult one... I like Ogbonna and I think he is good enough.

Rice is the future and should be played as first choice... he will only get better with experience.

Those two should be our first choice CB pairing IMO.

Do we therefore want to bring in another CB? If so how much do we spend... no point paying big money to end up not playing Rice.

You are then looking at decent cover... Reid has had his day, too injury prone but we have Oxford as back up and if we bring in Dendoncker then he can also play CB, as can Kouyate if he is happy to remain as a squad player as he shouldn't be getting into the 1st team on current form, specially as a midfielder.

Personally I would spend the majority of our budget on 2 of the best DM we can afford (who will obviously ease the pressure on the CBs) and 2 full backs. Plus an upgrade on Antonio.

Flannel 11:15 Thu May 24
Re: 4 or 5 new signings?
Personally think that our attacking line is not where we need to improve - think we need to stop them going in the other end!
Carrol, Antonio, Hernandez, Arnie and Huggy all can play up top - don't think scoring goals will be our problem,

If we only have 5 to bring in - I would suggest ;

Centre half - Top money on a solid centre half
Right wingback - Byram not good enough, Zab is a decent backup
Centre mid x 2 -Top money on 2 centre mids , this is the area that stops us reaching top 8 , you watch us play and we simply don't have the talent in there needed for the premier league
1 x Pacey attacking winger/attacking midfielder - I think we miss Antonio as he is the only one that can carry you up the pitch when under the cosh , lets inject some youth

I have not put in a keeper as I think Adrian is a decent number 1 so would pick up a back up for next to nothing,
